Background = items that are far away in a drawing (not much detail)
Middleground = items that are usually around the middle of the paper (usually where the horizon line is) (more detail than the background, but still not completely clear)
Foreground = items closest to the viewer (larger, more detailed, and typically brighter than the rest of the drawing)

Project Guidelines for part 1
Create a drawing that shows a background, middleground, and foreground. After you have it drawn, trace it with a black sharpie. After that, color your drawing using crayon, colored pencil, or markers. Remember - markers are best for smaller spaces, so if you have big spaces in your drawing, you may want to consider using crayons or colored pencils. Make sure that your coloring is smooth (for example, in the picture above, the coloring is excellent in the middle and foreground, but the blue is very sketchy, you can see all the pencil marks and direction of coloring - this area is not smooth.).
